BSUnion Nomination List for 2011/2012 Council

The following are the list of people who have been nominated for the remaining posts. The nomination period is still open until midnight tonight, so keep the nomination coming before it’s too late! ;D

Postgraduate Social and Welfare Secretary

Syafiq Metassan
LSE

I’ve known Syafiq for a good three years now, and in those three years, I have known him personally and have seen him work professionally. Committed, organised and professional, he has shown great dedication and passion towards any task that befalls him. Syafiq was one of the many who contributed in the creation of the official Brunei Southampton Society (BruSton) which later became affiliated with the University of Southampton as well as the Brunei Students Unit. He was also elected as the vice-president of the society and remained in the post until Spring 2011. Having him as my assistant in the BruSton society was indeed a great experience as he helped ensure that my tasks are done sooner rather than later, all to benefit the society we all had build together. This is why I believe that he would be able to act as a medium between the post-graduate students in the UK and the Brunei Students’ Unit. All professional jargons aside, Syafiq as a person is approachable and easy to get along with. Plus, he’ll be able to organise social gatherings for the PGs the fun way! All in all, he’s perfect for this job! ;D
– Lina Ali

Syafiq, a MSc in Comparative Politics student from LSE is a very vigilant and strong-willed person. This is our fourth year in the UK and as far as I can remember, for every trips that I have been on with him has been totally worth every penny. This is because he has always been the one who initiates the planning and organizing of our trips. Our itineraries have always been filled with exciting things to do and places to visit, and Alhamdulillah it always bound to go smoothly without a hitch. I can say that amongst the people in my little groupie, he is the most efficient initiator. He always volunteers to do things that none of us are bothered to do, but infact, these small things are which actually matters- so thank God for him (: He is always willing to help anyone on any matters and also very good with that. Basically, having him as the postgraduate candidate will not only benefit the postgraduates around the UK, but also by having him on the council, I believe that he will bring more exciting ideas that we can insya Allah commence with his drive and determination.

She successfully organised, Dakwah Ilmu during this year Ramadhan, a program for Bruneian students studying abroad to learn and understand more about islamic religious knowledge, this event was a combination of Islamic religious knowledge and motivational workshop, and Dakwah Ilmu is one of its kind to be held in Brunei, thanks to Nur Syahadah who came up with the idea. - Ak Hj Ahmad Fadillah Akhbar bin Pg Hj Sellahhuddin,
Head of International Relations and Cultures Executive,
Universiti Brunei Darussalam Student Association,
Session 10/11

Miss Syahadah is a kind and humble person who loves to do good and help others but more importantly she does it lillahi ta’ala. She was the chairperson of the first Dakwah Ilmu, a student organised motivational programme in collaboration with both the Counselling unit of Ministry of Education and Islamic Da’wah Centre, held during this recent summer holiday in Brunei. Having met and working with her for the first time, in a committee of different backgrounds, I must say she was a passionate leader, dedicated and communicate really well with others. She was the backbone of the whole programme both back and front stage. Problems and mistakes were dealt calmly and Alhamdulillah the four-day event ended with a success. She has a sincere and far vision and will be of great asset to the BSUnion.

– Cg. Haji Ali Yusri Bin Haji Abd Ghafor
Jabatan Sekolah-Sekolah, Kementerian Pendidikan

Syahadah Ismail is an easy-going person who has a strong drive and passion to make things happen. She is known to put other people first which we believe is very noble. Even when she is swamped with work, she still makes time to help other people. She is organised and plans things beforehand. She is the type of person who can also divide her time between studies and leisure. During 2010/2011, she held the position as Treasurer of BruBangor society where she carried out duties given efficiently.

During the summer holidays, she spent her time very well by organising a motivational program for Bruneian students in the UK as well as local students in Brunei. Students from Singapore, Egypt and Malaysia also came to the program. We have found that this motivational program has left a big impact on everyone that came to participate in which participants left feeling more spiritual and knowledgeable on religious matters.  Money was also raised to help children that are in need.  This just comes to show how big her influence on other people are.

Evidently, this goes to show how many good qualities she has, which are qualities that make a good leader. Not only does the events she organises help other people, it also benefits her in many ways. There is a saying that ‘You are the most happiest in life when you have found something you love doing.’  This applies to her. Therefore we believe she deserves to get the position because of her steadfast dedication towards making a positive impact on society.
